Did you know that pearls are not ordinary rocks or mere beads made by man? Pearls are actually made by an ocean animal called an oyster. How does an oyster make a pearl?

The oyster's shell is lined with a shiny material called mother of pearl or nacre. When some irritant, such as a piece of sand, gets caught in the oyster's shell, the cells of its mantle - the area where its body connects to its shell - cover the foreign matter with mother of pearl. This prevents it from hurting the animal.

Depending on the environment, this covering could be black, white, pink, grey, blue, yellow, cream, purple, or green.

Oysters have been cultivated by humans for at least 2,000 years, and pearls have been used for much longer - pearl collection has been documented in China since at least 1,000 B.C.

Pearls may be strung together to make a necklace, or used in other pieces of jewelry or decorative elements.

Then, draw a curved line from the back of the oyster's lower shell to a point above the scalloped edge of the upper shell. Draw a series of similar lines, overlapping one another, until the upper shell is complete. The last few lines should connect to the scalloped edge.

Color your oyster. Oyster shells are typically black, grey, or brown on the outside, but they are a special color called mother of pearl on the inside. This rainbow-colored material is iridescent, meaning it appears to change color as you look at it from different angles.
